  1. God GATHERS people—they often come from a diversity of backgrounds (13:1)
  2. God GIFTS people—to minister to the church and beyond (11:25-26 and 16:9-10)
  3. God SENDS people—to points of conflict, challenge, and opportunity (13:4-13)

(1) God GATHERS People—They Often Come From a Diversity of Backgrounds

Acts 13:1-12
1 Now there were in the church at Antioch prophets and teachers, Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen a lifelong friend of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. 2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ā€œSet apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.ā€
  • View each other as equals
  • Worship with humility
  • Pray with dependence
  • Listen to the Holy Spirit
  • Follow the Lord – whatever the cost

(2) God GIFTS People—to Minister to the Church and Beyond
Acts 11:25-26
25 So Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, 26 and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church and taught a great many people. And in Antioch the disciples were first called Christians.
Acts 16:9-10
9 And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, ā€œCome over to Macedonia and help us.ā€ 10 And when Paul had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

(3) God SENDS People—to Points of Conflict, Challenge, and Opportunity
  • Conflict: not all will agree with you (13:8)
  • Challenge: not all will stay with you (13:13)
  • Opportunity: there are so many more that need to hear from you
