The Importance of Prophecy
Pastor Phil Moser
May 1, 2022
"…I blessed the Most High, and praised and honored him who lives forever, for his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom endures from generation to generation; all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, and he does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, ā€œWhat have you done?ā€
Daniel 4:34-35
"In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory."
Ephesians 1:11-12
(1) Biblical PROPHECY is the telling of history prior to its happening.
(2) Biblical PROVIDENCE means that God is actively related to and involved in his creation at each moment.
536-530 BC The PROPHECY of Daniel
539-530 BC:  King CYRUS reigns in (Persia)
486-465 BC:  King XERXES I reigns (Persia)
356-323 BC:  ALEXANDER the Great reigns (Greece)
261-247 BC:  BERNICE, Antiochus II, Laodice
175-164 BC:  ANTIOCHUS Epiphanes reigns (Greece)
The detail of this history is so minute and accurate, so confirmed by history, that unbelieving critics have, without evidence, insisted that it was actually written 400 years later than Daniel would have lived…
The MacArthur Study Bible
ā€œAnd as for me, in the first year of Darius the Mede, I stood up to confirm and strengthen him. 2 ā€œAnd now I will show you the truth. Behold, three more kings shall arise in Persia, and a fourth shall be far richer than all of them. And when he has become strong through his riches, he shall stir up all against the kingdom of Greece.  3 Then a mighty king shall arise, who shall rule with great dominion and do as he wills. 4 And as soon as he has arisen, his kingdom shall be broken and divided toward the four winds of heaven, but not to his posterity, nor according to the authority with which he ruled, for his kingdom shall be plucked up and go to others besides these."
Daniel 11:1-4
ā€œThen the king of the south shall be strong, but one of his princes shall be stronger than he and shall rule, and his authority shall be a great authority. 6 After some years they shall make an alliance, and the daughter of the king of the south shall come to the king of the north to make an agreement. After some years they shall make an alliance, and the daughter of the king of the south shall come to the king of the north to make an agreement. But she shall not retain the strength of her arm, and he and his arm shall not endure, but she shall be given up, and her attendants, he who fathered her, and he who supported her in those times.
Daniel 11:5-6
After some years they shall make an alliance, and the daughter of the king of the south shall come to the king of the north to make an agreement. But she shall not retain the strength of her arm, and he and his arm shall not endure, but she shall be given up, and her attendants, he who fathered her, and he who supported her in those times.  7 ā€œAnd from a branch from her roots one shall arise in his place. He shall come against the army and enter the fortress of the king of the north, and he shall deal with them and shall prevail. 8 He shall also carry off to Egypt their gods with their metal images and their precious vessels of silver and gold, and for some years he shall refrain from attacking the king of the north.
Daniel 11:7-8
Then the latter shall come into the realm of the king of the south but shall return to his own land. His sons shall wage war and assemble a multitude of great forces, which shall keep coming and overflow and pass through, and again shall carry the war as far as his fortress. Then the king of the south, moved with rage, shall come out and fight against the king of the north. And he shall raise a great multitude, but it shall be given into his hand. 12 And when the multitude is taken away, his heart shall be exalted, and he shall cast down tens of thousands, but he shall not prevail.  For the king of the north shall again raise a multitude, greater than the first. And after some years he shall come on with a great army and abundant supplies.
Daniel 11:9-13

How God's Providence Works

•Spiritual forces are always at work even though we cannot see them.

 How God's Providence Works
•Spiritual forces are always at work even though we cannot see them (11:1)
•God is in the details—His idea of greatness is all together different than ours.

Then a mighty king shall arise, who shall rule with great dominion and do as he wills. 4 And as soon as he has arisen, his kingdom shall be broken and divided toward the four winds of heaven, but not to his posterity, nor according to the authority with which he ruled, for his kingdom shall be plucked up and go to others besides these.
Daniel 11:2-3
 How God's Providence Works
•Spiritual forces are always at work even though we cannot see them (11:1)
•God is in the details—His idea of greatness is all together different than ours (11:2-3).
•Fulfilled prophecy is a reminder that God is providentially in control of everything.
When it comes to providence, the biblical doctrine does not teach that events in creation are determined by chance (or randomness), nor are they determined by impersonal fate (or determinism), but by God, who is the personal yet infinitely powerful Creator and Lord.
